Root canal treatment, also known as endodontic treatment, is a necessary procedure when the internal pulp (nerve) of a tooth becomes infected or inflamed. This condition, called pulpitis, typically occurs when deep decay or trauma allows bacteria to reach the pulp tissue. If left untreated, the pulp will eventually die, allowing the infection to spread to the surrounding bone tissue at the root of the tooth. This can lead to more severe complications, including a painful abscess (apical periodontitis) or the formation of a cyst as the infection progresses.

When is Endodontic Treatment Necessary?

Endodontic treatment is often required if you experience one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Severe or persistent tooth pain
  • Tooth discoloration (darkening)
  • Prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures
  • Sharp pain or sensitivity when chewing or applying pressure
